Nine figures and 30 period costumes pay tribute to Oscar Wilde's comic masterpiece. Inspired by the cast and plot of Wilde's witty spoof of the British nobility and clergy, this collection of late-Victorian-era fashions features formal and leisure attire for characters drawn from London's social elite of the 1890s. Play synopsis included.

Cassock - The cassock, an item of clerical clothing, is a long, sheath-like, close-fitting, ankle-length robe worn by clergy members of some Christian denominations. The cassock derives ultimately from the tunic that was formerly worn underneath the toga in classical antiquity.

Beating the bishop - "Beating the bishop" is a slang term for masturbation. It probably originates from members of the clergy who, as part of their religion's attire, don vaguely phallic headwear.

Cassock-alb - A white or off-white cassock-alb has replaced the traditional cassock and surplice in some Anglican Churches since the 1970's. In the Roman Catholic Church the dalmatic and the tunicle are generally being replaced by the cassock-alb worn with the wide stole.

Clergy reserve - Clergy reserves were tracts of land in Upper Canada and Lower Canada reserved for the support of Protestant clergy by the Constitutional Act of 1791 which established the two provinces. One-eighth of all crown lands were reserved, with Protestant clergy initially interpreted to mean the Church of England.
