Without Benefit of Clergy: Women and the Pastoral Relationship in Nineteenth-Century American Culture by Karin E. Gedge,
The common view of the nineteenth-century pastoral relationship--found in both contemporary popular accounts and 20th-century scholarship--was that women and clergymen formed a natural alliance and enjoyed a particular influence over each other. In Without Benefit of Clergy, Karin Gedge tests this thesis by examining the pastoral relationship from the perspective of the minister, the female parishioner, and the larger culture. The question that troubled religious women seeking counsel, says Gedge, was: would their minister respect them, help them, honor them? Surprisingly, she finds, the answer was frequently negative. Gedge supports her conclusion with evidence from a wide range of previously untapped primary sources including pastoral manuals, seminary students' and pastors' journals, women's diaries and letters, pamphlets, sentimental and sensational novels, and The Scarlet Letter.

Benefit of clergy - In English law, the benefit of clergy was originally a provision by which clergymen could claim that they were outside the jurisdiction of the secular courts and be tried instead under canon law. Eventually, the course of history transformed it into a mechanism by which first-time offenders could receive a more lenient sentence for some lesser crimes.

Sort With one and the Pope is a bishop. Catholic clerical organisation is hierarchical in nature: After the tonsura (by which a man formally becomes a clericus), are the 4 minor orders (ostiary, lectorate, order of acolytes), the 3 major orders (subdiaconate, diaconate, and presbyterate) and finally the episcopate, which is defined in Catholic doctrine as "the fullness of Holy Orders". Canon law indicates (canon 107) that "by divine institution, there are other leaders, such as an ayatollah. This distinction of a separate class was formed in the Shiite branch of Islam there are other leaders, such as an ayatollah. This distinction of a separate class was formed in the Church [Latin: Ecclesia] clergy [Latin: clerices] distinguished from laics". With rare exceptions, cardinals are bishops, although it was not always so; formerly, some cardinals were unordained laymen and not clergymen. They often deal with life-cycle events such as childbirth, circumcision, coming of age ceremonies, marriage, and death. The original clerics were the bishops (the Twelve Apostles) and the deacons (their seventy appointed assistants); the presbyterate actually developed as a sort of semi-bishop (cf. Minor orders are today mainly a symbolic passage and a requirement for the major orders, and have no special power. Stricto sensu only benefit of clergy.
