City Tour of Rome Italy

Italy and the Grand Tour by Jeremy Black,

Italy and the Grand Tour by Jeremy Black,
For members of the social elite in eighteenth-century England, extended travel for pleasure came to be considered part of an ideal education as well as an important symbol of social status. Italy, and especially Rome--a fashionable, exciting, and comfortable city--became the focus of such early tourists' interest. In this distinctive book, historian Jeremy Black recreates the actual tourist experiences of those who traveled to Italy on a Grand Tour. Relying on the private diaries and personal letters of travelers, rather than on the self-conscious accounts of literary travelers who wrote for wider audiences, the book presents a fresh and authentic picture of how British tourists experienced Italy, its landscapes, women, food, music, Catholicism, and more. Using material from archives across Britain and a generous selection of illustrations, the book highlights the discrepancy between the idealized view of the Grand Tour and its reality: what people were meant to do was not necessarily what they did, what the guide books described as splendid was not always so perceived. Black discusses what Italian experiences meant to British visitors, and he considers the effects of tourism on British culture during this most exciting of centuries.

The European City by Leonardo Benevolo,
The European City by Leonardo Benevolo,
This is a history of the European city from the early Middle Ages until the present. It is also an account of the relationship between urban life and the history of ideas and culture. The author begins by discussing the survival of urban culture following the barbarian invasions from the north and the Islamic from the east, after the collapse of the Roman and Byzantine Empires. He then continues with a discussion of the great period of urban expansion between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, the growth of urban freedoms and the development of independent city civilizations in Flanders and Italy. The two centuries following the formation of the first European states brought concentrated power and the influence to their capitals (Rome, Paris, Prague, London, Antwerp, Lisbon, Seville and Genoa). New ideas of national identity were reflected in the organization of traditional urban space. The conflict between city and country had emerged by the sixteenth century and the author shows how this influenced the colonial towns of the two Americas. The book concludes with chapters on the effects of industrialization and modern transportation, in particular the devastating impact of the automobile. This unique synthesis of urban, social, cultural and political history is a tour de force and will be of wide interest to European, intellectual and urban historians.
