Computational Molecular Biology: An Introduction by Peter Clote,

Computational Molecular Biology: An Introduction by Peter Clote,
Recently molecular biology has undergone unprecedented development generating vast quantities of data needing sophisticated computational methods for analysis, processing and archiving. This requirement has given birth to the truly interdisciplinary field of computational biology, or bioinformatics, a subject reliant on both theoretical and practical contributions from statistics, mathematics, computer science and biology. Provides the background mathematics required to understand why certain algorithms work Guides the reader through probability theory, entropy and combinatorial optimization In-depth coverage of molecular biology and protein structure prediction Includes several less familiar algorithms such as DNA segmentation, quartet puzzling and DNA strand separation prediction Includes class tested exercises useful for self study Source code of programs available on a Web site Primarily aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students from bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, mathematics and the biological sciences, this text will also interest researchers from these fields.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: A Man Alone
Star Trek Deep Space Nine: A Man Alone
After arriving at Deep Space Nine, Ibudan (Steven James Carver), a Bajoran murderer recently released from prison, tangles with Security Chief Odo (Reni Auberjonois). When Ibudan is murdered in a holosuite, the evidence points to a shapeshifter as the guilty party. Odo, who had vowed to remove Ibudan from Deep Space Nine at any cost, is accused of the crime. Soon an angry group of Bajorans comes looking for justice and Commander Sisko (Avery Brooks) is forced to relieve Odo of duty. Although tests on a strand of DNA found at the crime scene promise to reveal the identity of the real killer, an impatient and violent mob chases down Odo and tries to take the law into its own hands.

Lagging strand - In DNA replication, the lagging strand is the DNA strand at the opposite side of the replication fork from the leading strand. It goes from 5' to 3' (these numbers indicate the position of the molecule in respect to the carbon atoms it contains).

Coding strand - When referring to DNA transcription (protein biosynthesis), the coding strand is the DNA strand which has the same base sequence as the RNA transcript produced (although with thymine replaced by uracil).

Single-strand binding protein - Single-strand binding protein, also known as SSB or SSBP, binds single stranded regions of DNA to prevent premature reannealing. The strands naturally want to coil back up so this protein attaches to the strands to keep the space made by the helicase open during DNA replication.

Triple-stranded DNA - A triple-stranded DNA is a structure of DNA in which three oligonucleotides wind around each other and form a triple helix. In this structure, one strand binds to a B-form DNA double helix through Hoogsteen or reversed Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds.
